Glen Davis Early History
There
can be no denial of the scenic magnificence of the site of Glen Davis.
The first residents lived in appalling conditions, lack of water,
sanitation, and inability to procure building materials added to
isolation. All was not a bed of roses for those who had to make their
home here. With the building of houses, some in brick which still
remain, and the provision of water, things became more civilized.
In 1947 there were 11 brick staff cottages,
100 permanent and 50 war-type emergency houses. A bag town of 125 sub-standard buildings.
Three churches, The school catered for 260 pupils. Shops included two general stores, a
barber, a butcher and a garage. There was a substantial post & telegraph office, a
bank, a police station, picture theatre, ambulance station, bakery, doctor, chemist and a
community hall. The Population in 1947 was 1,600
